“A little bit of Scotland in the heart of London,” claim the owners of this beautiful private members’ club in Belgravia. “A timeless piece of Scottish warmth. As you step through the doors of the Caledonian Club, the welcome you feel is akin to coming home.”
Founded in 1891, the ambition of the Caledonian Club has always been to present itself as the headquarters of Scotsmen in London. Its original site was in St James’s but it relocated to Belgravia after the Second World War, and now occupies a stunning Edwardian residence – with a grand, sweeping staircase and a lovely terrace – at No.9 Halkin Street.
Members, non-members, Scots or non-Scots… anyone can hire the venue for their #wedding. Some couples choose to hold both #ceremony and #reception here – it is licensed for the former – while others get married in one of the many nearby churches, before moving on to the club for the after-party.
There are two banqueting rooms available: the Johnnie Walker Room can seat 150 guests while the ballroom accommodates 120. The Library, Selkirk Room and Stuart Room are available for smaller parties. Although the chef will tailor the menu according to the bride and groom’s tastes, he of course offers a great selection of Scottish specialities including smoked salmon, salmon fillet, venison, MacDuff beef, haggis and Arbroath smokies. The club bar – “with its roaring fire and dangerously impressive collection of malts” – is impressive, too.
For overnight stays there are 39 bedrooms on the club’s two upper floors, ranging from “cosy singles to stylish suites”. As the club says, they offer “comfort, peace and calm, a pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly and Knightsbridge only minutes walk away”. Wedding couples are offered a complimentary night in the bridal suite.
And memorable wedding photos are guaranteed thanks to the great backdrops provided by the long terrace, the huge staircase, or outside in the adjacent gardens of Belgrave Square.
Many happy wedding couples have hired the club over the last year. “We had an incredible day,” said Roy and Anka who got married there in June 2017. “It really did exceed expectations across the board. The staff were all superb. Our guests have consistently commented on how lovely the club is – excellent food and service. The Caledonian Club will always have a very special place in our hearts.”
Imogen and Craig tied the knot at the club the summer before that. “The wedding day went incredibly well and we have received numerous communications from guests saying how wonderful the day was for them,” they said. “They also praised the venue for its incredible beauty. I can only endorse these sentiments.”
